On the first anniversary of the construction of Tesla Giga factory in Shanghai, the China-made Tesla Model Y was Project officially launched on January 7th. The first batch of China-made Model 3 were delivered to consumers.
Li Qiang, Secretary of Shanghai CPC Municipal Committee, visited Tesla Shanghai Giga factory for research and met with Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla. Ying Yong, Deputy Secretary of Shanghai CPC Municipal Committee and Mayor of Shanghai, launched the China-made Model Y Project with Elon Musk.

Tesla Shanghai Giga factory is the first wholly foreign-owned vehicle manufacturing project in China, and also the first Giga factory of Tesla outside the United States. The project was signed in July 2018 and the land was acquired in the same year. The construction started on January 7th, 2019, and the first batch of China-made Model 3 were delivered to Tesla employees in December. With the strong support of relevant national ministries, and with the practical cooperation and joint efforts of Tesla team and all parties in Shanghai, the project was started, put into production and delivered in the same year, making the world witness "Shanghai Speed" and "Tesla Speed".
In the morning, Li Qiang came to Tesla Shanghai Giga factory to listen to the introduction of the overall construction, project progress and model design of the project. He also had a cordial exchange with Elon Musk and his team and explored the future development of the project, the application of cutting-edge technology, the market prospect and the supporting facilities of the automobile industry. What's more, Mr. Li also inspected the production lines and the Model 3 cars made in China in the general assembly workshop.
Li Qiang congratulated Tesla on the new progress made in its development in Shanghai. He said that at present, the city is carrying out three new major tasks in accordance with the spirit of President Xi Jinping's important instructions on Shanghai. The city will focus on strengthening the "four major functions" and speed up the construction of the "five centers", which provides great opportunities for all kinds of enterprises to innovate and start businesses in Shanghai, and also provides broad space to deepen cooperation. It is expected that the two sides will continue to make cooperation at a new starting point and bring new breakthroughs. Shanghai will fully support Tesla to accelerate the follow-up construction of the project and realize the capacity expansion as soon as possible. It is hoped that Tesla will further expand its business layout in Shanghai, put more new technology research and development and new vehicle production, increase industrial chain cooperation with Chinese enterprises and Shanghai enterprises, and explore cooperation space in clean energy and municipal transportation. The Municipal Government will take Tesla as an example to optimize business environment and strive to provide better and more efficient services for the development of various enterprises in Shanghai.

Tesla Shanghai Giga factory integrates R&D, manufacturing and sales. The planned annual output in Phase 1 is 150,000 electric vehicles. China-made Model Y is an SUV model. The project will optimize and upgrade the production process of new energy vehicles and also manufacture key parts of new energy vehicles.
