On the morning of March 19th, the opening ceremony of the first 5G University in China and Joint Innovation Laboratory of 5G+AI Applications was held in Shanghai University of Engineering Science. This event was under the guidance of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and People's Government of Songjiang District, and jointly held by Shanghai University of Engineering Science, China Unicom(Shanghai) and NOKIA Alcatel-Lucent Co., Ltd. Zhang Jianming, Vice Chairman of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, was present and made a speech.
Mr. Zhang expressed that it is important for Shanghai to strengthen the core competency of the new-generation information infrastructure and give full play to 5G network support and application. What's more, it is also necessary to follow the highest standards, establish the brand of double Gigabit broadband city, and build the 5G network construction pioneer zone, 5G innovative application demonstration zone and 5G industrial agglomeration high land. The establishment of the first 5G university means a key step in the exploration of the educational application of 5G. 5G will provide teachers and students with immersive experiential teaching, distance interactive teaching, and virtual operation training, it will also create a digital ecosystem for schools, help scientific research, and support the development of various laboratories. At the same time, 5G tech will be further explored in the future to improve the efficiency of school management and promote the high-quality development of schools. Last but not least, it is quite important for all units involved in the government, industries, universities and research offices to further strengthen cooperation and accelerate technology research, application deployment and industrial promotion. It is hoped that China Unicom(Shanghai) and Shanghai University of Engineering Science will rely on the joint innovation laboratory, cooperate with enterprises like NOKIA Alcatel-Lucent to expand new business, build an industry innovation cooperation ecosystem, share opportunities for social development, and carry out comprehensive cooperation in new media and smart campuses.
It is reported that China Unicom(Shanghai) has built five 5G outdoor macro stations with 3.5GHz of 3GPP NSA architecture in Shanghai University of Engineering Science. One 5G indoor micro-base station has been deployed in the joint innovation laboratory to achieve 5G signal coverage in campus, office area, scientific research area and dormitory area, making Shanghai University of Engineering Science the first university in China to achieve 5G network depth coverage. Meanwhile, the "5G+AI Joint Innovation Laboratory" jointly constructed by China Unicom(Shanghai) and Shanghai University of Engineering Science has been put into use. The lab carries out industry application research cooperation based on 5G network characteristics around the application requirements of 8K video coding and decoding, digital copyright protection, AI and big data based on AVS2.
